MATHEMATICS
The Grade 6 teachers will be implementing
the JUMP Math program developed by John Mighton. JUMP Math works to create a
numerate society. JUMP Math is a numeracy program that is dedicated to
enhancing the potential in children by encouraging an understanding and a love
of math in students and educators. JUMP Math replaces the self-fulfilling myth
that some people are born with mathematical ability while others do not have
the ability to succeed. It assumes that all children can be led to think mathematically.
Information about this program and supplementary materials can be found on the
JUMP Math website: jumpmath.org
Math is divided into four strands:
1. Shape and Space
Shape and space includes
topics such as perimeter, area of rectangles, volume of cubes, angles, and
classifying triangles.
2. Number Sense
Number sense includes
topics such as place value, fractions, percent, decimals, multiples, and
factors.
3. Patterns and Relations
Patterns and relations include
topics such as finding relations between sets of data, continuing patterns, and
writing equations with variables.
4. Statistics and Probability
Statistics and probability includes
topics such as reading and creating line graphs, methods of data collection,
and calculating probability.
Evaluation
and Assessment
Students will be evaluated and
assessed on tests, quizzes, problem solving, book work, and mental math.
Class work will be checked daily.
