SOCIAL
STUDIES
The Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum focuses
on people and events in Canada from Confederation to the present. Content explores the changing character of
this country and examines the many territory changes, role of immigration and
the evolving relationships between First Nations, Inuit, Métis people and the
Canadian government. Students will also
study democratic processes as well as the development of Canada as a culturally
diverse society.
Course content will be divided into
the following sections:
1.
Building a Nation (1867 –
1914)
Students will learn about
Confederation and the addition of new provinces and territories to the
country. There will be a focus on
Manitoba’s entry into Confederation, the establishment of treaties and
reserves, the building of railroads, and the impact of immigration.
2.
An Emerging Nation (1914 –
1945)
This section will focus on
the Winnipeg General Strike, the Depression, the causes and events of the two
World Wars, as well as Canada’s involvement in these wars. Women’s rights, urbanization and
technological developments are also a part of this unit.
3.
Shaping Contemporary Canada
(1945 – Present)
This unit focuses on the
effects of technological and industrial advancements, development of Aboriginal
rights and the evolution of Canada as a bilingual and multicultural nation.
4.
Canada Today - Democracy,
Diversity and the Influence of the Past:
We will focus on the study
of democracy including the electoral process, federal, provincial, First
Nations, and municipal governments as well as the responsibilities of elected
representatives.
5.
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking
encompasses observations of the student’s ability to plan, question, gather,
evaluate and interpret information, give opinions and support their judgments.
Evaluation
and Assessment
Students will be assessed on projects,
assignments, research and presentations, tests, and quizzes.
